Older than Stonehenge, this site was built as a "passage grave," and stands to this day. A slot at the entrance projects a beam of sunlight through it to the inner chamber on the Winter solstice. A true marvel of engineering, built over 5,000 years ago.

Newgrange is one of the most famous neolithic sites in the world, and is the oldest Irish neolithic monument. Visit it if you get a chance. The experience is indescribable.

EDIT: I stand corrected. The oldest Irish neolithics are on the west coast, in Co. Sligo.

yeah, isn't it? there are numerous graves like this all over the Boyne Valley.... Newgrange is the largest.

Actually, I haven't a clue. I would assume remains of Celtic kings, same as the Pyramids in Egypt were built for their sovereigns. And I absolutely HATED history in school. Now, I've a new-found respect for the subject. Especially Irish history.

well school history is uniteresting, however most of whatever they don't teach is facinating! Like, I didn't know Cleopatra(sp?) killed herself. But apparently there's a theroy that she was murdered! Isn't that cool?

the same can be said of King Tut. I don't want to say nobody knows hoe he died, but one theory is that some of his family murdered him. Why, I don't really know.

And yes, they don't teach you much in school. i wholeheartedly agree with that. And that's really sad.

or don't teach it so dryly! Go check out the excellent movie "Teachers" if you want a, a good laugh, and b, check out the history "teacher". (Actually a mental patient). His approach to the subject is quite fresh :) I wish i'd had a history teacher like that!
